February New Releases We're Excited For!

February brings Black History Month and Valentine's Day--and a whole lot of fantastic new releases we're all excited for!

Here are our Fiction and Nonfiction New Releases!

A Forty Year Kiss by Nickolas Butler

I’ve read Butler’s short story collections and loved them. They were gritty and definitely not love stories as we’ve come to define them. So I’m curious to see what he does with this story of reunited lovers. His prose is enough for me to pick up this feel-good novel.

Out February 4th!

Shattered: A Memoir by Hanif Kureishi

Kureishi’s memoir is getting a lot of well-deserved attention in the news. After a devastating accident, he was in the hospital for months, dictating thoughts on his condition, but also on suffering, immigration, parenthood, writing, and more. This book is the triumphant result.

Out February 4th!

Gliff by Ali Smith

The early descriptions of this book are vague, as is only right for this author whose work verges on experimental at times. Again, this is an author whose writing I trust enough to pick up a book with the description: “a not-very brave new world. And two children. And a horse.”

Out February 4th!

Cleavage: Men, Women, and the Space Between Us by Jennifer Finney Boylan

No, it’s not a book about boobs. As a transgender American, Boylan reflects on the differences among the genders from a unique perspective. She also discusses her own life as a woman without a girlhood, a parent, and a spouse. Especially poignant in these times.

Out February 4th!

Alligator Tears: A Memoir in Essays by Edgar Gomez

Here is another distinctive voice. Gomez writes about growing up poor in Florida, learning how to scrape by and coming to realize what a scam the American dream is. This memoir in essays dissects the dream and offers a glimpse at what is truly important.

Out February 11th!

Brother Brontë by Fernando A. Flores

The earlier novel I read by Flores was simply bonkers, and I loved it. Very much looking forward to this dystopian tale--in which two women try to save their town and all of literature--that the publishers can’t seem to help but call a “gonzo near-future adventure.”

Out February 11th!

Elegy, Southwest by Madeleine Watts

Less gonzo is this road trip novel of a young couple driving through the American southwest. They follow the drying Colorado River as wildfires rage, and the reader bears witness to this tragic love story as the world around them collapses.

Out February 18th!

True Failure by Alex Higley

The characters in Higley’s novel have lying in common, but more than that, they all believe they must inhabit these lies to invent their own success stories. Increasingly more flagrant, the lies become the reality in this examination of life under late Capitalism.

Out February 25th!

Deep Cuts by Holly Brickley

Music brings a couple together in this novel, and threatens to pull them apart, as well. Is their collaboration worth it? A story for music-lovers, but also for anyone who has felt the struggle to be heard. Looks at the nature of talent, ego, belonging, and even obsession.

Out February 25th!

Mornings Without Mii by Mayumi Inaba

This is not another cute Japanese novel about cats (not that those aren’t great); this is a memoir of a writer and her companion, muse, and confidant of twenty years. How do we build a life, enjoy both solitude and togetherness, and maintain connection with other creatures.

Out February 25th!

The Hunger Games: Deluxe Edition (Hunger Games) by Suzanna Collins

A pretty edition of one of my favorite books as a preteen, I’m sold! I need to do a reread to prepare for the newest one coming out in March!

Telling the survival story of a wolf pup named Warm, this heartwarming story is inspired by Wolf 8, a real Yellowstone wolf who was the smallest of his pack and constantly bullied by his bigger brothers. Wolf 8 survived a tumultuous first year and grew up to be a different sort of leader.

Vampire-fantasy teemed with slow burn romance, found family, and revenge, led by an orphan girl willing to do whatever it takes to save her self-made kingdom. One of my favorite books of last year, is now being published in paperback with pretty sprayed edges.
